Prologue Systems helped Historic Richmond Foundation for the 200th anniversary of one of Richmond’s most architecturally important buildings, Monumental Church. The church, designed by Washington Monument architect Robert Mills, is one of the earliest and most distinctive examples of Greek Revival architecture in America. Built between 1812 and 1814, it was obviously important for restorers to understand the condition, or “health,” of the building. Prologue’s services provided a vital visualization tool for the building and enabled accurate documentation of the structural state of the church.

PROBLEM

Historic Richmond Foundation required a thorough evaluation and assessment of the current condition of the Monumental Church. The most recent set of drawings were rendered in the 1980s, and 3D documentation of the building did not exist. Facing a strong likelihood of renovations in the near future, the Foundation needed to be able to pinpoint areas of existing and potential damage.

SOLUTION

Prologue meticulously scanned the sanctuary and exterior of Monumental Church in color, rendering the most vivid visualization possible. Secondary areas of the building were scanned in black and white, including the tower and crypt.

BENEFITS

Historic Richmond Foundation gained an invaluable dataset in terms of building documentation. The scan data verified the accuracy of Historic American Buildings Survey project drawings rendered in the late 1980s. Prologue also created a Revit model to help with digital visualization.
